Preparing For Fall: Where to Start.

Posted on by Urban Eden

Although it may be easy to forget, with everything that has been going on in the world this year, fall is swiftly approaching here in the Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington areas. With fall comes a host of landscaping tasks. Now is a great time to begin preparing your yard for fall.

Cleaning Up

Do you have debris piles laying around from the last time you cleaned up your yard? Did storms and heavy winds cause debris to scatter across your landscape? Or has your yard just been left to nature for so long it is overgrown? Rain and more stormy fall weather will only serve to exacerbate these issues. Therefore, it is a good idea to address these issues before the heavy rains begin.

Weeding and Mulching

Similarly to cleaning up debris and overgrown areas of your lawn is ensuring proper weeding. At Urban Eden, we strive to avoid the use of harmful chemicals as much as possible; therefore, we generally remove weeds organically, either by hand or with the use of specialized tools.  Once any weed infestations have been mitigated, a great way to further combat the spread of weeds is by applying mulch/bark dust. Mulch has many benefits, which includes helping to slow the germination of weeds by blocking sunlight and smothering these undesirable plant seeds.

Aerating and Dethatching

Dethatching and aerating are important tasks that help to maintain the health and lushness of your lawns.  Dethatching is the process of removing built-up debris, known as thatch, which can harm your lawn.  Aerating is the process of puncturing small holes throughout your lawn to relieve compaction and give your lawn much needed access to light, air, and moisture.  We recommend these processes be performed on your lawn at least annually, though at the beginning of spring and fall is encouraged to ensure your lawn is as healthy as it can be.

Fertilizing

Speaking of ensuring your lawn is healthy; another essential element of a happy and healthy lawn is making sure it has the nutrients it needs.  Applying fertilizer to your lawn provides the nutrients that your grass will need in order to remain healthy year-round.  Fall is the best time to apply fertilizer as it will ensure your lawn has enough nutrients to make it through the hibernation period of winter.

Maintenance

Keeping up with mowing, edging, weeding, and ensuring debris does not build up is another important task. Weekly maintenance visits from a skilled landscape company can work wonders on your lawns and garden spaces. They take away the stress of caring for your landscape, so you can have a worry-free experience enjoying your yard, year-round.

Although there is plenty more that can be done to prepare your yard for fall, the items listed above are a great place to start. These tasks can be daunting, but Urban Eden Landscaping would love to help get your yard looking great. Contact us today or fill out our FREE estimate request online to get started. Stay safe!
