The Benefits of Year-Round Maintenance

Posted on by Urban Eden

There is always a need to maintain your landscape throughout the year here in Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington. Many of us think that landscape maintenance is only necessary during the spring and summer months. However, it is important to properly maintain your lawn during the fall and winter months as well. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider services throughout the year.

Debris Cleanup

Cleaning up debris is an endless task, especially in the Pacific Northwest, where wind, rain, and snow are common occurrences. Throughout fall and into winter, leaves, branches, and other debris have a tendency to accumulate on your lawn. If this debris material is left unchecked, it easily can cause brown or dead patches, fungus, and disease, as well as other detrimental effects. That is why it is a good idea to overhaul your lawn areas and clean them of debris throughout the fall and winter seasons.

Mulching

Mulching your flower and garden beds throughout the year has many benefits. If you already have mulch, it is still a good idea to continuously “fluff up” the mulch. This assures a more aesthetically appealing look to your landscapes. Not only does mulch help with curb appeal, but it also helps with soil erosion and compaction as well. Adding mulch to beds also helps to insulate vulnerable plants, and prevents winter weeds from establishing themselves, creating less work (and, therefore, saving money) for the growing seasons.

Lawn Maintenance

The colder months of fall and winter may prevent your grass from growing as quickly or as high, however, you should still consider routine maintenance on your lawn during these periods. If you fail to care for your lawn and desirable plants during the fall and winter seasons, it may prevent them from flourishing during the heavy growing season of spring and summer. Ensuring your lawn and plants are cared for during colder months will help to ensure that these areas are healthy come spring and summertime. Much like an athlete trains in his/her off-season, your lawn needs care in its off-season as well, so that they will be well prepared for the upcoming growing season. Fall and winter seasonal maintenance may require less mowing, but it will still require things like aeration, dethatching, fertilizing, and keeping debris from accumulating on your lawn. It is better to stay ahead of these tasks so your landscape looks great when spring starts versus playing catchup after it has already begun.

There are still plenty of tasks that need to be completed throughout the fall and winter months. Just because the flowers are not in bloom, doesn’t mean your landscape doesn’t require attention.
