Why Mulch?

Posted on by Urban Eden

Spring is one of the best times to apply mulch to your flower and garden beds in Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington. Not sure what mulch is exactly? Mulch comes in a variety of materials and varieties. Here we will discuss a few benefits of adding mulch to your landscape.

Weed Control

One of the most overwhelming parts of staying caught up with your landscape is weed control. Unlike many desirable plants, weeds (or undesirable plants) need very little accommodation to grow and flourish. Urban Eden Landscaping strives to minimize the use of chemicals to treat weeds and instead opts for more organic measures. One perfectly organic way to fight off the growth and spread of weeds is through the process of mulching. Applying mulch slows the growth rate of weeds by blocking sunlight and slowing the germination process.

Moisture Retention

If you have read our other post (What is Mulch?) you learned that there are two main categories of mulch: organic and synthetic. Organic mulch absorbs and stores a lot of moisture. Retaining moisture during the warmer months of the year helps ensure your plants have the appropriate amount of water during these times. Furthermore, moist soil helps to better insulate against the cold than dry soil. In other words, mulch helps to keep your plants properly hydrated in summer (helps keep the water bill down, too!) and keeps plants warmer during the winter months.

Soil Erosion

If you have an issue with soil erosion, mulch can help with that, too! Mulch helps to keep rainwater from washing away your soil. Essentially, mulch lightens the impact of rainwater on your soil. Therefore, water has less chance of breaking up your soil and carrying it away.

Builds Soil Nutrients

Organic mulch may come in a plethora of different varieties, but they all have one thing in common; they are made from naturally occurring substances that break down over time. As organic mulch breaks down and decomposes into the soil, it adds nutrients. These nutrients are beneficial to your soil’s composition and helps to build healthy soil.

Aesthetics

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of mulching is that it improves the look and beauty of your yard. Applying mulch to garden beds help to better define these areas and creates a more polished look in your landscape. Between organic and synthetic mulches, the possibility of finding one that matches your style is almost guaranteed.
