There are a variety of reasons why lawn patches can occur. Lawn patches can be identified by their brown, worn out, dried-grass appearance. It often occurs in areas of high foot traffic, where pets relieve themselves, or because of fungus or a lack of some vital nutrients. Fixing these lawn patches not only improves the look and health of your lawn, but it also improves the health of the plants around it.

Repairing Lawn Patches

In Camas, Vancouver, and Washougal, Washington, mid-spring and early fall is the best time to repair lawn patches in your lawn because grass is at its optimal growing period during these times.

First, rake the area clean of any debris and mow the lawn. Next, use a hard rake to spread a ½ inch layer of compost over the bare patch of lawn. Use a fan rake to work the compost into the grass and soil. Use a hand spreader to evenly distribute grass seed over the affected area.

Water the treated area twice a day for about 10 minutes until the grass begins to grow and reaches a height of about 1 inch. Then begin watering your lawn for 10 minutes 3 times a week. Furthermore, you can cover the treated area with straw or top-dressing to protect from birds and the sun to ensure evaporation does not occur to quickly.

Alternatively, instead of using the seed method of repairing a lawn patch, you can lie down new sod. To do this, cut the lawn patch to the shape of a square or rectangle and cut a roll of sod to match the shape. Then rake in some compost with a fan rake and level the area. Lay the sod down, press in firmly, and water thoroughly.
