3 Tips for Healthy Winter Lawns

Posted on by Urban Eden

The winter weather is hanging around parts of Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington. Although certain winter weather conditions can have detrimental effects on our lawns, oftentimes it’s how we respond to these conditions that can truly wreak havoc on them.

Be Mindful of Ice Melting Products

Oftentimes, when there is an abundance of snow and ice, people quickly pull out the deicer or “ice melt” and cover their landscapes with it. These products are, generally, high in salt or sodium, which quickly combats the ice. However, these products can have detrimental effects on your lawn and surrounding plants and shrubbery. Sodium strips grass and plants of their moisture, which salinate their cells. This causes it to dry out, creating brown patches and, eventually, death.  Therefore, it is not only important to be mindful of which products you choose to treat ice (there are various types that are more “plant friendly”), but also to be mindful of where you are laying these products around your property.

Stay off a Frozen Lawn

Snow and ice are not implicitly unhealthy for your lawn; sometimes a layer of snow can act as an insulative barrier between your lawn and the cold harsh elements of winter. With that being said, walking atop a snow-covered lawn can have unforeseen consequences.  Walking on the snow that covers your lawn, compacts the snow, making it take longer to melt. Therefore, the areas that have been trodden on, stay buried longer than their undisturbed counterpart, which can, later, create dead, brown, or patchy spots in your lawn. The best thing to do for your snow-covered lawn is to stay off of it and leave it undisturbed.

Fertilization

During the winter months, the grass is, generally, dormant. During this time, grass cannot always access the nutrients it needs to stay lush and healthy. That is why it is important to apply fertilizer at the end of fall and the beginning of spring. Ensuring that fertilizer has been properly applied during these times will greatly benefit how your lawn returns from dormancy.
