Mulching: Do’s and Don’ts

Posted on by Urban Eden

Proper mulching is an important aspect for every landscape, especially here in the Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington areas. There are many benefits to adding mulch to your garden beds, from changing the appearance of your landscape to retaining moisture for plants in times of drought. This blog will discuss the do’s and don’ts of mulching your yard.

What is Mulch?

Mulch is, essentially, a material that is spread out over the soil’s surface to help retain moisture, fend of the growth and spread of weeds, and add nutrients to the soil. Mulch comes in many different forms and can be divided into two main categories: organic and inorganic/synthetic.

Mulch Do’s:

Use Mulch as an Accent

Using mulch to enhance the appearance of your landscape is one of the most prominent reasons why people use mulch in their garden beds. Mulch comes in a variety of styles and colors so there is a mulch for every taste. Consider adding a mulch that compliments the color of your house or lawn decor.

Use Mulch for Moisture Retention

During the heat of the summer, we can experience extended periods of drought. To help lower the cost of your water bill (or to simply minimize the use of resources), applying mulch around your plants is a simple solution. Mulch helps to retain moisture, ensuring your plants have adequate hydration, year-round.

Use Mulch for Building Soil

Organic mulch, which is made from products that break down over time, can add much-needed nutrients to your soil. As time passes, the mulch will decompose and help to build your soil, keeping it happy and healthy.

Try Different Mulches

Perhaps that first mulch you decided on isn’t living up to your standards. Why not try another type or another color? Don’t be afraid to test out various forms of mulch to see what you like best.

Mulch Don’ts

Applying Too Much or Too Little

In general, the target level of mulch is about 3 inches. Too little mulch will not properly retain moisture or stop weeds from quickly returning. Conversely, using too much mulch can lead to drainage issues as well as the development of mold or fungus.

Ignoring Bare Patches

To help combat erosion and water runoff, be sure you evenly cover your garden beds. Bare patches left in these beds can quickly lead to problems with erosion. Ensuring that every inch of exposed earth is covered is essential.

Ignoring Trees

Applying mulch to trees (especially fruit and nut trees) is an essential element of good tree care. Like other plants, trees are highly benefited by mulch for water retention, nutrients, and the combatting of weeds or other undesirable plants that may rival your trees. Therefore, applying a thick layer of mulch around the base of trees is extremely beneficial.
