Common Lawn Pests in Washington State

Posted on by Urban Eden Landscaping

With its unique landscapes and relatively temperate climate, the Pacific Northwest is home to many nature lovers and that is especially true of the Camas, Washougal, and Vancouver, Washington areas. However, a battle rages between homeowners and the region’s most common lawn pests. Here we will discuss these different types of insects and critters, as well as how to identify, prevent, and manage these unwelcome guests in your lawn.

Chafer Beetles

The European chafer and the Japanese beetle are the most common chafer beetles in the Pacific Northwest. These pests cause patches of dead, brown grass by eating the roots. The adult beetles lay their eggs in the soil for the larvae to hatch and eat the roots, making effective lawn care critical for prevention.

Prevention and Management

  1. Apply roundworms to the soil in late summer to control larvae.
  2. Keep the lawn healthy and well fertilized to prevent beetle damage.
  3. Consider, only if necessary, using insecticides sparingly and strategically.

Crane Flies

Commonly known as leatherjackets, Crane flies can ruin lawns by feeding on grass roots. These pests are most common in areas with damp environments and will cause grass to brown and become patchy if left untreated.

Prevention and Management

  1. Access proper drainage to decrease dampness.
  2. Regularly perform aeration.
  3. Introduce natural predators such as birds to eat larvae.

Slugs & Snails

The wet climate of the Pacific Northwest creates the perfect climate for slugs and snails to thrive. Both can completely ruin most plants and grasses by chewing through the leaves and stems.

Prevention and Management

  1. Apply roundworms to the soil in late summer to control larvae.
  2. Keep the lawn healthy and well fertilized to prevent damage.
  3. Consider, again, only if necessary, using insecticides sparingly and strategically.

Moles & Voles

Moles and Voles create tunnel systems through the lawn, damaging roots and creating an eyesore for the homeowner. Voles, particularly, chew through the base of plant or tree roots.

Prevention and Management

  1. Use physical barriers around trees and plants.
  2. Set traps for moles or hire a professional pest control company.
  3. Properly maintain the lawn to discourage these pests.

Maintaining a lawn while worrying about all of these pests can create quite the challenge. Now that you understand how to identify these pests as well as prevent or treat them, you can protect your lawn from any harm from these unwanted critters. Be patient, and consistently use a well-rounded lawn care routine, and, when necessary, pest prevention and management tactics to ensure a happy and healthy lawn.
